Challenge: First-time candidate Mary Sylla approached us to run her campaign for the Ross Valley Sanitary District in 2012. For years, the Ross Valley Sanitary District had been plagued with poor management that resulted in numerous costly sewage spills. This highly publicized Marin race featured three candidates, including two incumbents, running for two seats on the district board. Mary knew that she needed the right team with the right strategy to win a seat in this competitive race, and she hired KRC to help her achieve her goal of winning a seat on the board and leading the district in a more positive direction.
Approach: Our team worked with Mary to develop a suite of materials ranging from yard signs and mailers to “dear friend” postcards and general campaign flyers. We also worked with Mary to help keep her on pace to meet her aggressive fundraising goals, ensuring that she had the necessary resources to compete down the stretch.
In addition to compelling materials, the real juice was in Mary’s field and GOTV campaigns. Together with our hard-working candidate and her devoted volunteers, we orchestrated an aggressive phone banking and door-to-door effort that ID’ed more than 1,000 voters prior to election day. Our solid GOTV operation ensured that the voters we identified as Mary’s supporters in the field either mailed in their ballots or made it to the polls to vote.
Results: In the end, KRC’s signature high-touch field strategies and campaign expertise helped propel Mary Sylla to a solid victory on election night, unseating a two-term incumbent by more than 3,500 votes. Mary came away with a decisive win, garnering 38% of the votes cast. We are proud to have helped elect a smart, progressive candidate to the Ross Valley Sanitary District.
